David Manning Photographers Bloggin bio picture

Welcome to dmp bloggin!

I'm a big believer in living life to it's fullest and for the most part, you'll find a smile on my face!  That's the short story about me.  The long story includes a passion for photography, playing my guitar, surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, hockey, mountain biking, skydiving and more!

I like good coffee in the morning, and good wine at night.  Cooking combines three of my favorite things, creativity, food, and friends. So you can often times find me in the kitchen making an Italian family recipe.  You're welcome at my house anytime!  Just bring a smile, an appetite, and if you want to score big points, a bottle of red wine!  (Oh, and don't be afraid to have your picture taken.  If you're here, it's bound to happen!)

All of these activities are amazing, but they would not be nearly as fun or possible at all if it weren't for God, my family, and my friends.  These three are the most important to me, and I cannot thank them enough for supporting me on this amazing journey!

HOW I SEE IT :: APPLE'S iPAD

Alright, I had to put my two cents in on the iPad.  Since the announcement, it has received some scathing commentaries from some very short sighted people with a complete lack of creativity.  I won’t take long.  Just a few paragraphs to explain the device and how I see it.

The rumors and hype were huge!  What is Apple going to come up with to enter the tablet market?  We know they’ve played with the idea in the past (evidence of prototypes has even been found), but had abandoned the idea because they didn’t believe it was a real “game changer”.  Many of us that regard Steve Jobs as “Uncle Steve” prayed that he would reconsider.  Then, last year, the hype started again and the rumor mills were aflutter.  Every Apple yielding, gadget loving person in America had heard that Apple was going to release a new “game changing” tablet.  I knew a couple of very important factors in the product though, that allowed for the product to meet the level of my expectations.

Traditionally, the first generation of any new Apple device is “less than” what people thought it might be.  Of course though, naturally humans are very creative and came up with a million an one things that we thought the iPad “could” or “should do”.  Don’t get me wrong, the first gen iPod, the first gen PowerBook, and the first gen iPhone were all incredible devices!  Critics were harsh with short sighted reviews that slammed the products for what they lacked though.  This is to be expected, and you can bet that nobody at Apple is losing sleep over a few bloggers that feel better about themselves when they can critique instead of praise.  All of those devices have gone on to record sales and I’m not sure I know many people that have never owned an iPod.  So what is the iPad and how will it be used?

Steve Jobs and the team that developed the iPad were not short sighted and neither am I.  This device is going to revolutionize your life, whether you like it or not.  You will end up buying one.  Maybe not this year, as the “early adopter” crew will sweep them up and begin their integration into mainstream.  You will see someone using one in line at Starbucks, look over their shoulder and wonder.  Maybe not even next year, when most books, newspapers, and magazines will have a version of their publication in iPad ready format and we will be seeing the release of the 2nd Generation iPad.  By then your neighbor will most likely have one though, and you will wonder.  I will guarantee that within three years though, you will have an iPad, and so will many of the people you know.

How many times have you read the news on the computer, printed out a recipe to cook in the kitchen, finished a book on a flight and wished the thing wasn’t so large that you could have packed two?  Well how about reading that same news on the couch, pulling up the VIDEO of the recipe to watch while making in the kitchen, and books?  Well how about storing thousands for you to take along with you anywhere you are?

For you photographers out there:  How about taking out your iPad for someone you’ve just  met and showing them a video slideshow of your work?  How about getting a new clients email, inputting their info into your ShootQ, and having a proposal sent to them before you even leave the coffee shop you just met them at?

Yes, there will be next generations.  It is almost guaranteed that the second generation iPad will have a front-facing video camera and probably a USB port for more generalized accessories.  So you can wait for the 2nd Generation iPad and be one of the masses that picks one up.  Or you can be an early adopter, pave the way, and have this device incorporated into your business and life well ahead of the curve.  Which is a place that I like to be!

My point is this:  The iPad is a new multi-tool.  Be creative, think outside of the box, and imagine what you can do with this tool!  You don’t have to get one right away, you can just come hang out with me and play with mine.  Yep, DMP will for sure be sporting an iPad!

February 17, 2010 - 3:35 pm Peter Benjamin - The way I see it is that Apple has to compete with PC in the category of "notebooks". It is, I believe, intended for the apple audience that cannot afford a fully capable Apple Macbook ($999).

February 12, 2010 - 2:50 pm Leeann Marie - I like your idea of using the iPad for your client meetings and sending off a proposal, via ShootQ, to them before they even get home. Sometimes when I meet with clients who seem really really excited, I do just that! Although, I take my laptop with me to my meetings for a slideshow in LR. But I think the iPad could do the same thing - just more portable! - Leeann

February 6, 2010 - 2:27 pm Jeff Jochum - Game changer. Hands down. Regardless of what it will eventually do - which I expect will be more than enugh - everyone "on the street" in May that you see using one will evoke a reaction. Love it. Hate it. Turn your nose up at or lean into it... they all mean huge success now that brands represent who we "are" more than they represent the product or manufacturer. $500 to quietly announce to everyone in eyeball distance that I'm an early-adopter of technology; can afford to spend my hard-earned dollars on such things; and that I am simply cooler than y'all? Cheap. iPhone syndrome, all over again. Oh yeah, and it does some pretty cool imagery stuff, as well. Truly, the Visual Web is upon us, IMHO. jeff

February 6, 2010 - 1:26 pm David Manning - Agreed on all points Tim. Except for the one about waiting of course! Those points are all the downsides of picking up a first generation Apple product. I'm sure that the second generation iPad will have larger memory, a camera, multiple apps, and more. I gotta say though, I loved my first generation iPhone, and I'm my second generation, and my third generation ;) Soooooo, I guess I'm "that guy". No bother though. I'll call you up when I'm in your area and you can mess around with mine!

February 6, 2010 - 9:08 am Gabriel Gonzalez - Couldn't agree more! The first thing that came to my mind was: "how would a client or a vendor react when they see you pull this out to show them your work?" If an iPhone is a decent way to show your work, how will this enhance the possibilities. For sure I'll get one for my business, but the $499, and wait for future generations to get a 3G one with more capacity.

February 6, 2010 - 4:10 am Tim Halberg - call me short sighted... but I can already do those things with my laptop... and my iphone is more portable and holds as much or more than 2/3 of the iPad sizes available... no doubt in my mind that within a year to a year and a half I'll have one, but honestly, apple hears what people are saying/expecting/wanting in a tablet (or any new device they release) and it's sad how much they always hold back on their first releases just so they can quickly have a second release to sell more... (look at the release of the iphone and the quick release of the second version - they were offering refunds to people who'd just bought the first version) not saying apple isn't brilliant and they won't make a ton of money and they won't change the market/create a new one, but they really could do so much better. they deserve the criticism. they are too big for their own britches at most times (mind you I absolutely adore their britches, but still...) glad you are looking at the positive of it, but they still need to be called out and pushed to do better. can't wait to have one of these in my hands to play with! ;-)

February 6, 2010 - 12:42 am Jeff - I'm RIGHT there with you :) We'll be grabbing on the day they come out. The possibilities for it's use are endless, but the things you mention here (especially the ideas that apply to photographers) are spot on and invaluable. This could be one of the best presentation tools ever developed :)
