David Manning Photographers Bloggin bio picture

Welcome to dmp bloggin!

I'm a big believer in living life to it's fullest and for the most part, you'll find a smile on my face!  That's the short story about me.  The long story includes a passion for photography, playing my guitar, surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, hockey, mountain biking, skydiving and more!

I like good coffee in the morning, and good wine at night.  Cooking combines three of my favorite things, creativity, food, and friends. So you can often times find me in the kitchen making an Italian family recipe.  You're welcome at my house anytime!  Just bring a smile, an appetite, and if you want to score big points, a bottle of red wine!  (Oh, and don't be afraid to have your picture taken.  If you're here, it's bound to happen!)

All of these activities are amazing, but they would not be nearly as fun or possible at all if it weren't for God, my family, and my friends.  These three are the most important to me, and I cannot thank them enough for supporting me on this amazing journey!

HOW I SEE IT

I think there’s something very funny about doing what you love to do for a living. I absolutely LOVE shooting photography and the fact that I get paid for it still blows me away when I stop and think about it. Honestly, I really enjoy working! I know that sounds strange to most of you, but when I’m shooting a wedding or portrait session I’m usually smiling the whole time!

Then there’s this other side of doing what you love for a living and it’s the lack of doing it for yourself anymore. I liken it to pro surfers. I’ve been surfing for 13 years now and I don’t think that I would ever want to be a pro surfer (not that I could make it as one, I’m just saying). The reason is that I see pro surfers working and not surfing. Yeah, many of them still do it for the love of surf, but often times I see them at work for sponsorships and to win contests so they can continue getting paid.

This is the case for many photographers that I see and it bums me out. There are tons of photogs out there that had a deep passion for photography that they turned into a business. Then the business end overwhelms their lives and the love of photography is only expressed through work. Granted, I love producing art for my clients, but I need something for me. So I adamantly try to make time to do what I love, just for me. That means that I grab my camera, go somewhere I enjoy and sloooooww down. Because when I slow down and look around, I begin to see things “How I See It”, which I think is very different for every person. Put 10 photogs in one location and chances are you’re going to get 10 people looking at things very differently.

So the other day Whitney and I packed a towel, my camera, a surf tank, and my pooch Rome and headed down to Scripps Pier in La Jolla. After chowin’ on some delish Chipotle action, we walked the beach for a bit during sunset and I looked around at the beautiful place that we were. The shots below are “How I See It”. Enjoy.

This first one was just the hilarity that is Rome at the beach! He loves/hates the waves and always ends up pretty much dragging Whitney up and down the beach!

I love the colors that came out of this moment!

Some surfers getting in a last few waves before the light was gone.

I’m always mesmerized by the waves washing up on the shore. It’s like watching a campfire, for some reason it’s hypnotizing.

This one is getting printed at 30″ wide for our wall!

Lastly, as always, here’s the money shot! One of those beautiful peaceful moments. When I look at photos like this, I can really put myself back in that place. One of the many reasons I love photography.

If you’re a photog reading this, pro or amateur, ask yourself if you’ve taken time lately to pursue your passion, just for you!

July 24, 2009 - 5:36 am ajira - Thanks for the reminder! It can be easy to forget... I've set myself some daily projects to keep me grounded in my love for this work, and present in every moment so I'm connected to what I'm seeing all around me. It's working really well so far!

The colors in the palm tree pic are fabulous. Love the last few beach/wave photos too. Really gorgeous. Nice one!
